Out of Gas began as photos of abandoned gas pumps found by the side of a country road outside Rhinebeck, NY. I was intrigued by the survival of these icons of an earlier time. To me, these rusty gas pumps are symbols of the beginning of the end of the “Age of Oil”. I realized the expanding, pivoting panels of this book structure were a good showcase for the panorama of rusting roadside relics, symbols of road trips past, and of America’s love affair with the automobile
